PAT Testing
folly can now offer affordable Portable Appliance Testing (PAT). This involves a series of tests on all portable electrical appliances such as computers, kettles, lamps, fan heaters, amplifiers and more! The tests ensure that the appliances are safe to use.
PAT testing is a vital part of Health and Safety requirements for businesses and the self-employed alike. It is particularly important that you have your electrical appliances regularly tested:
-
If appliances are used by employees in the workplace, in the field, at home, etc.
-
Wherever the public may come into contact with the equipment at workshops, in shops, in hospitals, in schools, etc.
-
Wherever appliances are hired or supplied to the public or other businesses.
-
When appliances have been serviced or repaired.
PAT testing involves:
Visual inspection checking for:
-
Damaged flexes
-
Damaged plugs and equipment (overheating, burn marks, discolouration)
-
Correctly wired plugs
-
Correctly rated fuses
A series of tests that depend on the class of equipment, and may include:
-
Earth bond testing
-
Insulation test
-
Earth leakage test
-
Polarity test
All appliances that pass the tests will be clearly labeled with a pass sticker.
If an appliance fails it will be labeled as such, the plug will be removed and you will be informed that the item will need professional attention from a qualified electrician.
You will be provided with a record of all the items that have been tested and a schedule for the next round of required testing. The re-test schedule depends on the type of equipment and it's use, but is usually once a year.
We can test 240v devices fitted with a standard three pin plug. We can also
test most 240v to 110v transformers, however we do not offer testing for
110v devices. In the case of some high power devices it may not be possible
to complete the optional power-on leakage test, however so long as the
device passes the visual, insulation and earth bond test (class I devices),
the device will receive a pass.
For testing potentially dangerous devices, for example high power angle
grinders, you will need to provide a competent member of staff to safely
handle the devices during power-on tests.
Although we do not carry out repairs to failed devices, we can at your
request replace non-standard plugs and incorrectly sized fuses. The cost
will be £1 per fuse and £3.00 per plug. Alternatively you may wish to have
a competent member of staff in attendence, with a supply of new plugs and a
variety of fuses to carry out the work, and so allow devices to be retested.
Prices for testing are:
£1.66 per device
£1.00 per IEC (computer) power cable
£1.00 to fit correctly sized fuse
£3.00 to fit three pin plug
(£30 minimum charge for onsite visits, plus travel for outside Lancaster -

These prices assume that all the devices are easily accessible, and may be
powered off for a short time without affecting your business. If this is
not the case please give us a ring to discuss your requirements.
